Accord called on governments at all levels to be accountable to citizens, ensuring the dividends of democracy are felt across the country. The statement reminded the government of its constitutional responsibility to provide security and welfare for the people, as outlined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. Accord believes that this is the true essence of democratic governance.

“There is no substitute for progressive leadership that meets the needs of the people in whom sovereignty resides,” the statement read. “It is time for government to demonstrate leadership that prioritises the people and meets their constitutional expectations.”

Condemning Insecurity and Bloodshed

The party expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing insecurity in the country, calling for immediate and decisive action from the Federal Government to address terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, ritual killings, and the activities of killer herdsmen. Accord condemned the failure of past administrations to adequately tackle these issues and warned that the lack of political will has led to the proliferation of new terror groups.

“Our hearts bleed over the daily killing of innocent citizens in their fatherland,” the statement said. “Governments are elected to provide security, maintain public order, and safeguard the interests of the people. It is unjust and immoral to abdicate these crucial constitutional responsibilities.”

Accord urged the government to equip and motivate security agencies to effectively combat the rising tide of violence and criminal activities across the country.

Accord reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good governance and sustainable democracy, calling on all Nigerians to renew their faith in God and in the future of the nation. The party expressed optimism that with God’s help, Nigeria could become great and prosperous again.

“Let us use the Easter celebration to renew our faith in God and the nation,” said Barr. Maxwell Mgbudem, National Chairman of Accord. “With God on our side, Nigeria will be great and prosperous again.”
