Accord Party Calls for Urgent Action on Gender Equality, Special Seats for Women

The Accord party has called for accelerated efforts to dismantle barriers hindering women's advancement in Nigeria, urging the National Assembly to pass the bill on special seats for women in parliament.

In a statement released to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, themed "For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment," the party emphasized the crucial role of women in nation-building while highlighting the persistent challenges they face, including gender inequality, discrimination, violence, and limited access to education.

“Nigerians cannot be in one accord in fostering national unity, prosperity, sustainable development, and democracy when half of the population is marginalized,” said Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem, National Chairman of Accord. “It is time to change the narrative and take concrete steps to empower women and ensure their full participation in governance.”

The party reaffirmed its commitment to gender inclusivity, calling on lawmakers to demonstrate their support for women’s political representation by ensuring the swift passage of the special seats bill.

“As a gender-friendly political party, we urge the National Assembly to expedite action on the special seats for women bill. Its passage would be a significant step toward achieving gender inclusion in politics and governance,” Mgbudem added.

The statement also referenced the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, emphasizing that Nigerian women and girls need tangible policy changes rather than continued rhetoric.

“The call for gender parity is not new. Thirty years after the Beijing Declaration, we must move beyond words and take decisive action,” Mgbudem stressed.

Accord reiterated its commitment to advocating for gender rights and empowerment, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring a fair and equitable society for all.

“Together, we can #AccelerateAction on gender parity,” the statement concluded.
