Legit.ng recalls that Akeredolu died on December 27, 2023, and would be buried on Friday, February 23, in Owo, his hometown, according to the programme released by the family.

Akeredolu, 67, passed away in a German hospital after a prolonged battle with leukaemia and prostate cancer.

After his demise, Aiyedatiwa emerged as the governor. He was sworn in by the state's chief judge, Olusegun Odunsola, at an event at the governor's office in Alagbaka, Akure.

The incumbent governor narrowly escaped being impeached in 2023 and barely survived through the intervention of the courts.

It also took the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to further quel the political crisis that threatened the peace of the state.

The Ondo governor added that it was for the same reason that he chose Tayo Oluwatuyi as the secretary to the state government.
