BREAKING: Tension as Legislative Workers Threaten To Shut Down National, State Assemblies

  • Legislative workers have threatened to lock up all state and national assemblies across the 36 states of the federation
  • The workers explained that they had concluded a plan to shut down all assemblies due to the governors’ failure to implement their financial autonomy
  • They disclosed that they issued an ultimatum to the governors on September 18, 2023, which has expired

FCT, Abuja - Legislative workers under the auspices of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) have threatened to shut down all 36 state and national assemblies in the country on Wednesday, October 25.

As reported by Daily Trust, the workers said they have agreed to lock up all the state and national assemblies pending when their demands for financial autonomy of the legislative arm of the government would be granted.

The acting Secretary General of PASAN, Agugbue Ugochi Happiness, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, October 23.

Agugbue said their decision to shut down legislative arms is due to the governors’ failure to implement the financial autonomy in line with the 1999 Constitution.

“We refer to our letters dated 18th September 2023 and 7th of October, 2023 on 21 days ultimatum to embark on industrial action if financial autonomy is not implemented in the State Houses of Assembly nationwide by Wednesday, October 18th 2023 and hereby inform you that the leadership of our great union has further extended the ultimatum by one week.
“We, therefore, hope that the extension would further avail ample opportunity to meet the demands of the union and avert the available industrial action.
“We hereby reiterate the union’s preparedness to direct the members to embark on the proposed strike action if its demands are not yielded to.”

Senate takes action after NLC protesters pull down national assembly gate

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the Senate set up a committee after protesting unions broke down the National Assembly (NASS) complex's first gate.

The protesters, in their hundreds, had marched from the Unity Fountain in Abuja to the NASS complex to express their displeasure with the “anti-poor people policies" of the Bola Tinubu administration.

National Assembly beef up security over planned protest by legislative workers

In another report, the National Assembly management on Monday morning, September 27, 2021, beefed up security after workers under the auspices of Salary Arrears Affected Legislative Aides (SAALA) vowed to ground activities.

Security personnel including anti-riot and regular policemen, Department of State Services (DSS) personnel and Sergeant-at-Arms have been deployed to the complex manning various entrances and exits.
