BREAKING: Suspected Hoodlums Attack Kogi Governor Bello’s Convoy

  • Suspected hoodlums attacked the convoy of Kogi state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, while he was travelling from Abuja to Lokoja
  • The incident took place near the Naval Base, a few kilometres from Lokoja, allegedly by supporters of Alh. Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, the governorship candidate of the SDP

Lokoja, Kogi state - Suspected hoodlums reportedly launched an attack on the convoy of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the Governor of Kogi State, while he was travelling from Abuja to Lokoja on Saturday, June 3.

The incident occurred near the Naval Base, a few kilometres from Lokoja, Nigerian Tribune reported.

According to a statement released by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, it was speculated that the attackers were supporters of Alh. Muritala Yakubu Ajaka.

How that attack on Yahaya Bello's attack happened

Meanwhile, the statement further described the attack, stating that the road was blocked by Ajaka's convoy upon sighting the Governor's convoy.

Armed thugs associated with Ajaka reportedly began firing sporadically at the Governor's convoy.

The statement added that a Tundra vehicle bearing the logo of the SDP and adorned with SDP flags obstructed the Governor's vehicle.

The occupants of the alleged SDP-branded Tundra were armed with rifles and short guns. Fortunately, the Governor emerged from the scene unharmed, displaying a resilient spirit.

Security aides, others injured

Some security aides and other staff members accompanying the Governor sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly transported to medical facilities for treatment.

The statement assured the people of Kogi state that there is no cause for panic as security agencies are fully in control and are committed to apprehending the hoodlums responsible for the attack.

The state government also emphasised its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that the attackers face the consequences of their actions through the judicial system.

“Some security aides and other aides attached to the Governor sustained some degrees of injuries and have been rushed to medical facilities for medical attention," the statement read partly.

APC supporters urged not to retaliate

Governor Bello cautioned members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against engaging in any retaliatory attacks.

He stressed that any form of insecurity from any party would be met with severe penalties.

In another report, President Bola Tinubu endorsed Governor Bello's anointed successor and APC governorship candidate, Honourable Ododo Usman.

Tinubu, who received Ododo at his residence in Abuja on Saturday, April 29, urged party members in the state to work towards the party’s victory at the polls.
