BREAKING: DSS Gives Update on Fani-Kayode’s Interrogation

  • The Department of State Services (DSS) has revealed why it invited former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode for interrogation
  • DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya said the invitation was in respect of an investigation of some of his allegations and insinuations relating to the national security
  • Though the APC chieftain has been granted bail, the security agency said the interrogation is not yet over

FCT, Abuja - The Department of State Services (DSS) has said the interrogation of the former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode is still ongoing.

DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya disclosed this in a statement released on Tuesday, February 14, The Punch reported.

Recall that the DSS invited Fani-Kayode who is the director of special projects and new media for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council on Monday, February 10.

The invitation was over a series of tweets he made where he alleged that some high-ranking military officers met with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, with a view to carrying out a coup.

The military, however, debunked the claim, stating that such plans were not in any way true.

While the former minister has been granted bail, the DSS in its statement on Tuesday said the chapter of interrogation into the matter is not closed.

“The Department of State Services hereby informs the public that it invited Chief Femi Fani-Kayode to its National Headquarters, Abuja, on 13th February, 2023. The invitation was in respect of an investigation of some of his allegations and insinuations relating to issues relevant to​ National Security.
“Chief Fani-Kayode faced a Panel which interviewed him on the subject matter. Afterwards, the Service granted him administrative bail and directed that he makes routine returns to the Office with effect from Wednesday, 15th February, 2023 till otherwise. The investigation, however, continues," the statement read.

Meanwhile, the DSS has also warned political parties and their spokespersons to apply restraint in their comments during the period of the elections, Nigerian Tribune also reported.

This is to avoid heating up the polity and evoking tendencies that could lead to violent reactions as well as undermine peace and order," DSS explained.

Fani-Kayode regrets raising alarm over alleged coup

Meanwhile, Fani-Kayode has said he regretted raising the alarm over an alleged coup d'état in the country.

After being drilled by the DSS for five hours, the former minister said he should have been cautious before going public on the issue.

He acknowledged that the talk of a coup raised some dust across the polity while explaining that he aims to ensure that the security agencies are on top of the situation in case there is any iota of truth in the matter.
