Stop and Search Begins at NASS Complex Over Terror Alert Today

The National Assembly has announced that new strict security arrangements would commence on Monday, October 31, for the National Assembly complex.
This follows several alerts regarding security threats in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
According to the NASS Security Management Committee, the new measure would commence with “a stop and search policy” with the complex being a vulnerable target for insurgent attacks, Punch Newspaper reports.

In a memo signed by the Clerk of the Committee, Tahir Sani, the Committee resolved to adopt several proactive measures in the short and long terms, Tribune Newspaper reports.
The memo read:
“One of such measures is the directive to Security Agencies and the Sergeant-at-Arms Department to ensure that, effective Monday, 31 October, 2022, all vehicles coming into the National Assembly premises are thoroughly searched. This entails that, the drivers of the vehicles shall by themselves open the booths of their cars and submit their vehicles to comprehensive checks.
“Honourable Members and Distinguished Senators are by this notice advised to use the Presidential gate, unless they are willing to submit themselves to this stop and search policy.
“While regretting the inconvenience that this policy may cause to our Visitors, Staff, Honourable Members and Distinguished Senators, it is important to state that this measure is due to the exigent demands of our security challenges.”

Meanwhile, Ali Ndume, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army, has pledged that the Red Chamber will continue to show adequate support to the Nigerian Army (NA) in its efforts to contain domestic security challenges.
Senator Ndume who led members of the Senate Army Committee in the role of statutory overseer to the Nigerian Army Headquarters on Thursday, October 27, expressed gratitude to the NA for the operational successes achieved thus far in combating terrorism, robbery, and other crimes.
Commending the chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Farouk Yahya, Ndume said the Army has shown competence and dedication to their tasks. He also noted that lawmakers at the Senate are determined to put an end to the security challenges that plaguing Nigeria by intensifying efforts to address the unrest in troubled areas of the country by the end of the year.
