Breaking: Tension in Anambra As Daredevil Gunmen Attack 3 Locations

  • The residents in the Ogidi headquarters of the Idemili North LGA, a Military checkpoint in Onitsha and Eke Oko in Aguata LGA have been thrown into fear and worry
  • There is uneasy calm in these areas following a fresh attack by unknown gunmen in the state on Monday, May 16
  • Meanwhile, since Chukwuma Chukwuma Soludo emerged as the state governor, Anambra has become the hotbed of deadly attacks

There is tension in the air as gunmen have attacked three locations in Anambra state.

The areas include the Ogidi headquarters of the Idemili North local government area, a Military checkpoint at the highbrow 3-3 Housing Estate in Onitsha and Eke Oko in Aguata local government area.

The incidents according to the Vanguard newspaper, occurred barely two days after the Governor of the state, Chukwuma Chukwuma Soludo, visited the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Residents are still in fear even after Governor Soludo visited the area

Fear gripped residents who apparently thought that the governor’s visit might end today’s sit at home.

However, at Eke Oko, an identified middle-aged man wearing a police vest with the inscription “Say No to Crime” and riding on a motorcycle, was shot dead by an unknown person.

Police react

Some people in the area said the victim might actually not be a policeman, especially as the state police public relations officer (PPRO), Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga said there was no report of the death of any policeman in the area.

The victim’s motorcycle was still lying beside him as people tried to identify who he is.

Idemili North LGA attack

Also in the early hours of today, a section of Idemili North local government area headquarters, Ogidi was set ablaze by unknown arsonists.

According to the report, some residents claimed it was a fire incident caused by an electrical fault, others said it was done by unknown gunmen.

No fewer than four official vehicles, as well as the Magistrate Court located inside the local government and a building housing the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) were burnt.

Police also confirmed the development

The state PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the Ogidi incident, explaining that the swift intervention of neighbours and police operatives quelled the fire. No life was lost.

Previous attacks

Also on Sunday night, gunmen attacked military men and engaged them in a shoot-out at 3-3 Estate, Nkwelle Ezunaka, near the city of Onitsha.

Legit.ng gathered that the shooting lasted several hours, scaring the residents of the area.

The state police command confirmed the Onitsha shooting, although no casualties were reported.

Professor Charles Soludo had visited the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu while in detention.

The governor of Anambra state said that Kanu was in his spirit even though he expressed sadness over the ongoing criminalities in the southeast region.

According to the number one man in Anambra, Kanu is not also happy about the brutal enforcement of sit-at-home by groups parading as a member of IPOB.

The growing level of insecurity in the southeast region had become a thing of worry to the new governor of Anambra state.

Soludo said he will ensure that everything right is done to end the violence and killings perpetrated by hoodlums in the region.

He also committed to joining forces with governors of other states of the southeast to meet the needs of the people and put a stop to the insecurity ravaging Igboland.
