Bandits in Zamfara have started asking for more than N1 million levies from residents of communities in Zurmi, Kaura Namoda, and Birnin-Magaji local government areas.
Vanguards reports that among the communities affected by what some have termed an unthinkable trend are Birnin Tsaba, Gabaken Mesa, Gabaken Dan-Maliki, Turawa, Askawa, and Yanbuki.
This has put indigenes and residents at the mercy of armed criminals who seem to have instituted their presence in the state like a separate government.
A resident who spoke with journalists without revealing his identity disclosed that the people of Askawa had paid N5 million for the release of 18 kidnapped persons.

“Gabaken Mesa has paid N1 million, Gabaken Dan-Maliki, N1 million and Birnin Tsaba N1 million, just to mention but few.
“No one is going to police to report, knowing full well that nothing will be done but to tell them to pay the money.
“I personally went to the military on Friday evening in Kaura Namoda to report the incident; I almost ended up fighting with one of the soldiers. I can categorically tell you nothing has been done, till now.”
On his part, the commissioner for information in the state, Ibrahim Dosara, confirmed the development to newsmen but noted that the government is working with security agencies to secure the lives of citizens in the state.
