Another Tragedy: Many Feared Dead As Gunmen Attack Imo Community Again

  • Gunmen have again attacked another community in Imo state, killing some persons and injuring others
  • This comes barely 48 hours after Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma cried to President Buhari for help
  • Meanwhile, many residents at the attacked community, Etekwuru community in Ohaji/Egbema have started leaving the community

In what can described as another sad incident in Nigeria, Etekwuru community in Ohaji/Egbema local government area of Imo state has been attacked by gunmen.

This comes barely 48 hours after Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma called on President Muhammadu Buhari for help.

The gunmen reportedly killed some persons and injuring others.

Vanguard newspaper reports that many residents at the attacked community have started leaving the community, abandoning their homes.

The traditional ruler of the Etekwuru community, Eze Kenneth Okereke, confirmed the attack and said he was at the Police station regarding the incident but promised he would give the details of the attack later.

He said:

“Yes, my community was attacked by gunmen and I will speak on it later. I am at the police station for now."

Speaking on the development, an eyewitness said:

“They were shooting everywhere as they entered different sections of the village. We cannot have the exact number of people dead or injured or the number of houses damaged.
“As you go you will see some people lying down and many houses destroyed. Tomorrow, we will know the extent of the damage and the number of deaths.
“We will also know the number of the houses destroyed. As I am talking to you, many people have fled the village into the bush and they sleep there. I don’t think they will come back for now.”

One attack too many in Imo state

Eze Okereke said this is not the first time such an incident has happened within the area.

He said sometime in October, some yet to be identified gunmen invaded the community and brunt his palace and official vehicle.

Eze Okereke said while nobody has ascertained why the gunmen attacked his palace, it is also clear that the invaders planned to kill him.

He added that he had written to the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, informing him that he (the traditional leader) had been in exile since that attack.

He also called for the governor's assistance as the chief security officers of Imo state.

Police officer killed by gunmen in Imo state

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a police officer reportedly lost life in a fresh attack by gunmen at Arondizuogu in Ideato local government area of Imo state.

The policeman was shot dead by the gunmen who attacked the police station located in the Ideato LGA.

Rabiu Hussaini, the commissioner of Imo state, has reportedly ordered an investigation into the attack.

Army arrests the secretary of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)

Also, the Nigerian military deployed to Imo state have arrested one Obinna Nwite, who they say is a secretary of IPOB.

Nwite was said to have been arrested with arms, ammunition and a register containing IPOB members' names.

The military says the IPOB official has since been handed over to prosecuting agencies to face the law.
