Panic As Trigger-Happy Policeman Shoots Man Dead in Osogbo, Residents Take Action

  • A trigger happy police officer reportedly shot dead a drill operator in the Ota Efun area of Osogbo, Osun state

Osogbo, Osun state - There was chaos in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, on Friday, December 3, following the death of an unidentified middle-aged man who was allegedly shot by a policeman.

It was gathered by Nigerian Tribune that residents of Ota Efun, the area where the incident happened, pounced on the trigger-happy officer but he luckily escaped.

Not happy with the development, protesting youths took to the streets in protest as they barricaded major roads in the area.

What led to man's death

BBC reports that trouble started when the police allegedly chasing some boys pulled up and began confronting the driver of a truck belonging to a drilling company, Shekeenah Drill Tech, and his colleague.

Both men were said to be trying to fix the vehicle which spoilt on the road.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim who was a drill operator before his untimely death was allegedly slapped by one of the policemen who were about six in number. Not long after one of the police officers reportedly shot him in the chest.

It was learnt that when the policemen realised the man was dead, they ran from the scene for fear of being attacked by angry residents.

Protests by late man's colleagues

Youths in the area and colleagues of the deceased were reported to have taken his remains to a nearby police station.

Efforts to reach the state police spokesman proved abortive but a top police officer who preferred anonymity confirmed the incident.

Trigger-happy officer loses job

There have been several cases of extra-judicial killings by police officers. One of such men was recently dismissed by the Nigeria Police Force.

Edem Ebong, a police inspector lost his job after he was dismissed for shooting and killing no fewer than 5 innocent victims in Enugu.

The police officer attached to a lottery firm in Enugu, on Sunday, June 20, killed at least five persons and injured four others.

The governor of the state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, condoled with the victims of the shooting during his visit to the hospital where the injured were receiving treatment.
