Army Arrests IPOB/ESN Members Who Tried To Kidnap Doctors, Nurses in Imo

  • Some doctors and nurses in Imo state are said to have been saved by troops of the Nigerian Army under the Exercise Golden Dawn Sector 3
  • A kidnap attempt was made on the doctors and the nurses who were on medical outreach in Amaju in the Isu local government area of Imo state

The Nigerian Army has said its troops successfully foiled a kidnap attempt by some members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Amauju Isu local government area of Imo state.

A statement signed by the director, Army public relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, said the group tried to kidnap a group of medical doctors and nurses under the umbrella of Doctors on the Move Africa.

The statement which was seen by Legit.ng said the exercise by the IPOB and ESN members were foiled by troops of the Exercise Golden Dawn Sector 3.

Nwachukwu said victims of the foiled kidnap attempt were on outreach to provide free medical services to residents of Amucha community in Njaba local government area of Imo state.

He said the troops in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force 211 quick response group and the police moved into action upon getting information on the plot.

According to the Army spokesperson, the team of medical professionals were escorted to a safe location while the troops went after the suspected criminals.

He said the suspected criminals were accosted at Amauju in the Isu local government area of the state where they were enforcing a sit-at-home among residents of the community.

Nwachukwu said:

“In the firefight that ensued, one of the criminals was neutralised, while the others took to their heels."
“One of them, who had escaped with a gunshot wound was later apprehended by the local vigilante and handed over to the police."

He added that one pump action gun, five live cartridges, one Lexus 300 XR SUV and a mobile phone were recovered from the gang.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a younger brother to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra has condemned remarks by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over the IPOB leader's followers.

Prince Emmanuel warned the lawmaker to be mindful of his utterances over issues concerning the Igbo people.

Emmanuel also accused the former governor of Abia state of working against his own people for political gains.
