Unknown Gunmen Kill Soldier in Imo, Colleagues Invade Community

Imo - Gunmen on Monday afternoon, November 22 killed a soldier when they attacked some military personnel in Awomamma, Oru East local government area of Imo state.
In a reprisal attack, angry colleagues of the deceased regrouped, stormed the town, and allegedly burnt a hotel, cars, houses, and shops.
The Punch newspaper reports that the incident which happened at Ishieke junction in the area has caused panic in the community.
According to the report, many indigenes of the community have fled as soldiers took over the community.

A source quoted in the report said:
“Some hoodlums attacked some soldiers at Ishieke junction in Awomamma and killed one of them. They zoomed off towards Ihiala in Anambra state. Later soldiers invaded the area and caused havoc in the area by setting a hotel, cars, houses, and stalls on fire.”
The attack comes barely 24 hours after the Imo state commissioner of information, Declan Emelumba, told journalists in Lagos that the state is relatively peaceful at the moment.
The Nation newspaper quoted him as saying:
“We can say that peace has returned to Imo state, relative peace. You know, before now, we’ve had this bombardment of unknown gunmen, banditry, and so on and so forth.
“Because it was almost alarming, like every week you will see one story or the other about daredevil attacks on police stations, human beings, etc. But, the governor took it as a challenge. It was a big challenge and he took it head-on.”
Gunmen kidnap former deputy governor's father
Recall that the father of a former deputy governor of Imo state, Prince Eze Madumere, was kidnapped by gunmen at Iho community in Ikeduru local government area.
The kidnap victim aged 89, is the traditional ruler of Ezi-Mbieri autonomous community in Mbaitoli local government area.
He was abducted by the gunmen after sporadic shootings on Friday morning, November 19.
Traditional rulers shot dead during meeting in Imo
In a related development, gunmen recently opened fire on traditional rulers during a meeting at Njaba local government area in Imo state.
About three traditional rulers were feared to have died during the attack with several others wounded on Tuesday afternoon, October 19.
The spokesman of the Imo state police command, Mike Abatam, confirmed the attack, adding that three traditional rulers died while those who sustained gunshot injuries were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
