Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Killing Brigadier General, Soldiers in Borno

A report by Reuters indicates that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack where Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three other soldiers were killed on Saturday, November 13.

The militant group made this known via its Telegram account hours after the tragic incident that took place in Askira Uba local government area of Borno state, National Post added.

Recall that the gallant soldiers were killed while on their way to reinforce troops at Bungulwa village, near Askira Uba.

It was gathered that troops of 28 Task Force Brigade, Chibok, had mobilised to provide reinforcement in Askira, which was under attack.

How Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu was killed by ISWAP

This development is coming after reports emerged that the attack was launched by Libyan mercenaries who reportedly connived with ISWAP members.

Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume, the chairman of the Senate committee on the Nigerian Army, said Zirkusu was killed because he has been the nightmare of terrorists in the area.

Ndume revealed that the attackers laid an ambush for the NA officer and rammed a bomb-laddened car into his vehicle.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Nigerian Army confirmed the killing of the commander of 28 Task Force Brigade, Chibok.

A statement by the Nigerian Army spokesman, Onyeama Nwachukwu, also confirmed that the terrorists killed the general, alongside three other soldiers.

Nwachukwu, however, said the troops successfully defended their location and destroyed ISWAP equipment during the battle.

Buhari mourns troops killed by ISWAP

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari commiserated with the family of Zirkusu and three other soldiers who were killed by Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters.

The Nigerian leader in a statement released on his official Facebook page expressed sorrow at their deaths, saying the deceased paid the supreme sacrifice in a very rare display of gallantry.

While urging the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Faruk Yahaya to accept his heartfelt condolences, Buhari went on to note that Nigeria has lost brave soldiers.
