Breaking: Drama in Imo State As Six Lawmakers Remove Speaker

  • Imo lawmakers have on Monday morning impeached speaker Paul Emeziem, replacing him with Kennedy Ibe
  • The new speaker, Ibeh, represents Obowo state constituency and was first elected into the parliament in 2015 and was reelected in 2019
  • Meanwhile, the impeached speaker told journalists that he had not been removed, insisting that, the news of his impeachment was childish

In what can be described as a big drama, some Imo lawmakers on Monday morning impeached Speaker Paul Emeziem, replacing him with Kennedy Ibe.

Ibe was one of the six lawmakers, Emeziem controversially suspended on July 8 for unparliamentary conduct.

The Nation Newspaper reports that the exercise was carried out amidst tight security.

The session which didn’t last more than 15 minutes came to an end immediately Ibeh assumed office as the new helmsman of the parliament, Punch Newspaper added.

Emeziem was said to have rushed into the complex but was barred from gaining access into the complex when he got wind of the purported removal

Meanwhile, the impeached speaker told journalists that he had not been removed. According to him, the news of his impeachment was ” childish, null and void”

He said:

“Amara Iwuanyanwu can’t convene a plenary because he was properly impeached. If there should be any plenary, I am the one empowered by the law to call for it. Today is not our plenary day. Today is for our committee sittings not plenary. Amara Iwuanyanwu stands impeached.”

Meanwhile, some lawmakers in the Imo state House of Assembly have raised an alarm over plots to bring back the recently impeached deputy speaker, Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu.

The lawmakers say there are attempts to foist Iwuanyanwu, the member representing Nwangele state constituency, on them by powerful forces in the state.

They, however, vowed to resist attempts to bring back Iwuanyanwu as the number two lawmaker in Imo state House of Assembly.

They also accused Governor Hope Uzodimma of making attempts to interfere in their affairs by planting moles amongst them. One of the lawmakers, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member who spoke to Legit.ng on the condition of anonymity,
