Anambra Governorship Election: IGP Removes DIG Egbunike As Head of Security Hours to Poll

Awka - The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Alkali Usman Baba has removed the Deputy Inspector General, DIG Joseph Egbunike as the head of the security team for the Anambra governorship election a few hours to the exercise on Saturday, November 6.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CP Frank Mba, has confirmed that DIG Egbunike has been redeployed, but adduced no reason for the removal of the senior officer who is an indigene of Anambra state.

The zonal police public relations officer, Princess Nkeiruka Nwode, however, said DIG Egbunike did not resign as reported in some quarters.
She said he was only sent to another important assignment, describing as untrue the reports making the rounds that another Assistant Inspector General of Police also resigned.

Nwode added that the development won't affect the smooth conduct of the election in the southeast state.
Legit.ng gathered that DIG Egbunike has since been replaced by acting Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Zaki Ahmed.
DIG Egbunike reassuring words at the Anambra election peace accord
Legit.ng had reported on how DIG Egbunike assured all stakeholders present at the Anambra governorship candidates peace accord that the election will not have any hitches.
His words:
“One thing I can assure you is that all security agencies will remain calm firm and professional. We will ensure that nobody will disturb your peace.
“We have spoken enough. Everybody will have a level playing ground if they follow the rules of INEC.”
How DIG Egbunike led the police team before he was sudden removal
DIG Egbunike was saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the implementation of the operation order evolved from the Election Security Threat Assessment.
His duty was to ensure a peaceful environment devoid of violence and conducive enough to guarantee that law-abiding citizens freely perform their civic responsibilities without molestation or intimidation.
He was assisted by DIG Ahmed and other strategic commanders deployed to Anambra state for the election.
