NEMA Steps In As Lagos Resident Climbs 200ft Mast To Commit Suicide

  • An allegedly depressed man is said that have been saved from committing suicide in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos state
  • Daniel Bassi was said to have climbed a 200 feet mast at Nasfat Centre by Go Yee Church to kill himself

A man identified Daniel Chibuike Bassi, has been convinced to come down from a 200 feet mast unhurt by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Bassi was said to have climbed the mast located at Nasfat Centre by Go Yee Church, Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos on Wednesday, October 27, with the intent to commit suicide.

Officials of different agencies swing into action

The acting coordinator of NEMA, southwest, Ibrahim Farinloye in a statement shared with Legit.ng said Bassi was convinced to come down from the mast unhurt.

Farinloye said Bassi who is an aluminium technician works in the Aluminium Village and lives in Dopemu area of Lagos state.

He has since been taken to the Gowon Estate Police Station, Lagos for an interactive discussion with officials of NEMA, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Police.

A possibly depressed Lagos resident who needs help

According to the NEMA official, from the discussions so far, Bassi appears to be incoherent and could not make a complete statement all through.

He added that the technician could not remember his age until some people were consulted.

Farinloye said the agency has also appealed to officials from the Nigeria Police Force to allow Bassi who seems distressed some time to calm down before any further action could be taken.

"He told us that he arrived at the scene at about 0800hours and started climbing the mast at 0830 hours. He revealed that he never knew the area before but something pushed him to go to the scene."
"He was said to have called people around the scene and informed the people that he wanted to do a fellowship and started with songs and praise."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that one person was confirmed dead after a building located at No 97 Lagos Road Haruna in the Ikorodu area of Lagos state collapsed.

Officials who were first respondents at the scene of the incident said the building was originally abandoned by that owner before its collapse on Monday, October 18.

Also, NEMA said two people were already receiving treatment after sustaining various degrees of injuries from the incident while efforts were being made to completely pull the building down.
