Dbanj and Small Doctor Thrill Fans at MTN Best of the Streets
Popular Nigerian hitmakers Dbanj and Small Doctor, responsible for hits such as "Oliver Twist" and "Penalty," respectively, recently shut down the Abesan Youth Center in Alimosho, Lagos, with outstanding performances of their numerous hits on Saturday, February 11, 2023.
The event, free for all attendees and proudly sponsored by MTN Nigeria in collaboration with premium brands such as Guinness, CloseUp, Mdundo, Seagrams, and others, began at 1 p.m. and featured a dance competition and stunning performances by the contestants.
The duo delighted Abesan residents at the MTN Best of the Streets music competition, where Ayotunde Sobowale triumphed over 30 other contestants and walked away with a cash prize of N1.2 million.
Dbanj stepped onto the stage with cheerleaders dressed in yellow, much to the audience's delight. ‘Igwe’, ‘Mo Gbona Feli Feli’, and other hits were performed by the crooner. During his performance, Dbanj gave N100,000 to a 10-year-old rapper named Young Alex who shared the stage with him, N50,000 to a female dancer named Adeola Fatere, and another N100,000 to Ayotunde Sobolawle for performing Igwe better than any other contestant.
Following D'banj's performance, Small Doctor, also known as Omo Iya Teacher, took the stage to give an energetic performance of his hit songs ‘Penalty’, ‘Mosquito Killer’, ‘My People’, ‘Uzobu’, and in typical fashion, the crooner spoke words of wisdom and prostrated to the audience before leaving the stage.
The Best of the Streets is a new music talent discovery initiative from MTN Nigeria designed to create a platform for young Nigerians to express their talent for a chance to become superstars. Unlike other talent discovery platforms, Best of Streets is taken to the community with 30 contestants from the locality divided into three groups of ten.
Each contestant is given one minute to perform any song of their choice before the audience selects two contestants from each group who will advance to the finals using the popular "Waka or Stay" method, and the judges choose one contestant from each group to advance to the finals. Following that, nine finalists will be shortlisted, and the finalists will perform any song of their choice while the judges sieve through all the performances and select the winner of the competition.
MTN Nigeria is a brand that has invested in the dreams of the country's youths by providing platforms such as Y'ello Star and Project Fame West Africa, a pipeline through which numerous artists have announced themselves to the world. Best of the Streets is another such platform where local talent can express themselves and compete in a healthy environment. It also enables MTN to discover, invest in, and develop local talent into world-class musicians. MTN has long been a supporter of the Nigerian music scene, and this competition represents another example of the company's continuous support for the industry.
