Applatch's journey began with an app designed to curb smartphone addiction, which garnered over 43,000 users. Inspired by feedback from parents, founders Olabamiji Samson Opaleye (CEO) and Aliyu Odumosu (CTO) conducted a survey involving 106 parents and 62 children in Sheffield, UK, and Lagos, Nigeria. The results emphasized the need for a tool that encourages children to prioritize studying while still enjoying their favorite apps.
How Applatch Kids Works
Parents can install Applatch Kids on both their smartphones and their children's devices, available on the App Store and Play Store. By creating profiles and linking devices via a secure PIN, parents can control app access on their children's tablets or smartphones. Unlike traditional parental control apps, Applatch Kids keeps apps locked until children earn screen time by passing educational quizzes in Maths, English, or Science.

Children must answer 10 out of 15 multiple-choice questions correctly to unlock entertainment apps for one hour. They can take up to three quizzes per day, earning a maximum of three hours of screen time.

Quizzes are tailored for children aged 3-12, with future updates including topics like financial literacy and online safety. For younger children, a "tap to listen" feature aids comprehension.
● Progress Tracking
Weekly email summaries to parents provide insights into their children's academic performance, helping track progress and identify areas for improvement.
● Child Safety
Applatch Kids includes live location tracking and alerts parents to sensitive notifications from online predators or cyberbullies, currently available on Android. The app also blocks inappropriate websites for children under 13.
According to UNICEF, 8 out of 10 children experience cyberbullying, exposure to online predators, and inappropriate content, leading to emotional distress and compromised well-being (UNICEF, 2022). Applatch Kids addresses these concerns by alerting parents when their children receive push notifications with sensitive keywords from online predators or cyberbullies. This feature currently works only on the Android version of Applatch Kids.
