Breaking: Gbajabiamila Summons ASUU President, Finance, Education Ministers, Amid Imminent Strike

Amid an imminent strike across Nigerian universities, Femi Gbajabiamila, the speaker House of Representatives, called for an emergency meeting on Thursday, November 18.

Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget and national planning, Adamu Adamu, minister of education, and Prof Emmanuel Osedeke, president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were all summoned to the emergency meeting, The Punch reports.

Gbajabiamila made the disclosure following a motion moved by Prof Julius Ihonvbere, chairman House Committee on Basic Education.

In another report by P.M News, Gbajabiamila summoned the officials after ASUU issued 3 weeks ultimatum over the failure of the government to implement the agreement reached with it.

The speaker in his ruling after the lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion on Tuesday, November 16, told the committees on education, tertiary and basic, to launch an investigation and report back to the House.

ASUU threatens fresh strike, gives federal government 3-weeks ultimatum

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that there were indications that another nationwide strike across Nigerian universities is imminent as ASUU cried out over the failure of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to fulfil its lingering demands.

In an effort to drive home its requests, the union gave the government a three-week ultimatum to meet its demands contained in the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed by both parties.

According to the union, failure to comply could resort to industrial action, adding that the government should be held responsible if they fail to address the issues.

ASUU accuses FG of ignoring ultimatum

In a related development, ASUU had on Tuesday, September 21, said that the ultimatum it issued in July did not elicit any response from the federal government.

Oshodeke stated that the government had not implemented the agreement it reached with the union nor responded to the ultimatum.

The union had on Saturday, July 19, issued a fresh ultimatum to FG, to pay the outstanding 10-month arrears of its members’ salaries or be prepared for another industrial action.
