Nigerians Dominates US Foreign Students List in Higher Institutions

A new report has shown that Nigeria tops the list of African countries with her citizens seeking education in the United States of America.

The Open Doors report was released on Monday, November 15, by the Institute of International Education (IIE) and the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

It showed that in the 2020/2021 academic year, the United States remained the top destination for international students, welcoming over 914,000 international students from over 200 places of origin.

In the report, Nigeria also ranked 10th country with its students visiting the US as an education destination.

The report titled, "The 2021 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange", indicated that there was a slight drop in the number of students from Nigeria currently studying in the United States - less than half the worldwide average decline.

The figures of International students studying in the US

The current figure of 12,860 Nigerian students represents 33% of African students in the United States, making Nigeria both the leading source of students from the continent and the 10th largest place of origin country worldwide.

Nigerians are enrolled in more than 1,000 institutions in the United States, while students using EducationUSA Nigeria services recorded $28 million in scholarships and financial aid awarded to those admitted for the 2021 academic year.

Open Doors 2021 reports also highlights the US higher education sector as a destination of choice for international students and the growing interest in international educational exchange among U.S. students.

A statement by the US embassy in Nigeria said that the release of the new Open Doors data is a good one for the International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the US Department of Education.

The week is aimed at preparing Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from other countries to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

The statement said that international students build life-long connections with Americans, their peers, host families, professors and communities.

The US government further said that the United States remained open and welcoming to international students, even throughout the pandemic.

The statement added:

"The U.S. Government and the U.S system of higher education have been flexible to safely welcome international students, providing opportunities and resources to students during a global crisis."

Nigerians doing wonders in the United States of America

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously a Nigerian man, Olanrewaju Shitta-Bey, was promoted from an associate professor to a full-time professor in the US.

Shitta-Bey's promotion makes him a professor of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Maryland Global Campus, USA.

Describing the promotion, Shitta-Bey said he got what he worked hard for, adding that it came at a record time.

The US reacts to electioneering activities in Anambra state

In other news, the US government issued a serious warning ahead of the Anambra election which took place on Saturday, November 6.

The US said its officials would be monitoring events at the Anambra governorship election closely as it would be expecting a peaceful and transparent polling process.

The US government threatened visa sanctions not only for people who instigate violence during the polls but also for their relatives.
