Popular Nigerian Polytechnic Expels 4 Students, Rusticates 6, Gives Reasons

Ilorin, Kwara state - The Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has expelled four students and rusticated six others.

The Punch reported that the school's principal assistant registrar, Ismail Onikoko, in a statement issued on behalf of the registrar, Kolawole Akande, on Wednesday, October 20, explained the students were expelled and rusticated over alleged impersonation and examination malpractices.

The offences are contrary to the matriculation oath the students swore to, the statement explained.

The four expelled students

The six rusticated students

  6. Yakub Opeyemi

The six listed above were rusticated for one session, according to the statement.

They were said to have committed the examination malpractices at the Institute of Technology during the 2020/2021 First Semester examination.

The statement advised the affected students to comply with the directive to avoid litigation.

Kaduna Polytechnic expels 96 students

In a related development, the Kaduna Polytechnic has expelled 96 students from various departments over malpractices and other academic misconducts.

This was made known in a circular dated September 1. The circular indicated that the disciplinary measure was taken by the academic board of the institution.

The board on Wednesday, August 25, considered the reports of examination malpractice committed by the students.

Federal polytechnic expels 51 students

Similarly, 51 students in the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa were expelled for alleged involvement in exam malpractice.

A spokesperson for the polytechnic, Malam Uba Mana, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday, August 18, that the alleged malpractices occurred during the 2019/2020 academic session.

He said the expelled undergraduates comprised both full-time and part-time students. The spokesperson stated that the academic board of the institution approved the punitive action imposed on the undergraduates.

Final year student takes university to court over expulsion

Meanwhile, a Nigerian student identified as Iniobong Ekpo Isang has taken Akwa Ibom University to court after expelling him over a social media post he made against the governor of the state, Udom Emmanuel.

The university in a letter dated April 9th, 2021 hinged their decision of his expulsion on what it described as ''gross misconduct", an act they said constituted a breach of the Matriculation Oath.

The expulsion letter which was signed by the University Registrar, John E. Udo, also read that the student was barred from entering the campus premises.
