Buhari launches eNaira

President Muhammadu Buhari launched the digital currency on Monday, October 25, making Nigeria the first African country to create a Central Bank digital currency (CBDC).

eNaira is a digital currency issued by CBN. It’s a digital form of the naira that is housed in a secured wallet called the eNaira wallet.

The digital currency has two applications — eNaira speed wallet and eNaira merchant wallet.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has commended the CNB for creating Africa’s first CBDC, eNaira, saying the country will reap many benefits from the initiative.

At the launch of the currency, the president said his approval was “underpinned by the fact that the CBN has been a leading innovator in the form of money they produce, and in the payment services they deploy for efficient transactions.”

The CBN had engaged a Barbados-based digital financial technology firm, Bitt Inc, as a technical partner to develop the eNaira app.
