The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) has expressed strong support for the National Single Window (NSW) Project, an initiative aimed at streamlining port-clearing processes to boost economic growth, improve trade facilitation, enhance federal revenue, and strengthen national security at Nigeria's borders.

This commitment was made by Dr. Vincent Isegbe, the Comptroller General of NAQS, during a visit from the Project Management Office of the National Single Window at the NAQS headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

They highlighted the potential benefits of the NSW, including increased government revenue, higher foreign investment, greater trade volumes, and the automation of processes to achieve greater efficiency in trade operations.

Dr. Isegbe assured the NSW project team of NAQS’s full cooperation and urged all relevant agencies to align with government policies that promote ease of doing business in Nigeria.

He stressed the importance of clearly defining and respecting the roles of various agencies involved in trade facilitation to ensure the smooth implementation of the NSW Project.

In addition to supporting the NSW Project, Dr. Isegbe highlighted NAQS’s own initiatives to ease the exportation process for agricultural commodities.

He noted that NAQS has instituted the Export Certification Value Chain (ECVC) for 30 agricultural products, creating opportunities for stakeholders and engaging youth in export activities to earn foreign exchange.

He also mentioned the successful implementation of electronic certification processes by NAQS, which has enhanced the agency’s efficiency and contributed to its top ranking among the 36 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) on the ease of doing business in the 90-Day RRA PEBEC ranking.

Expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for inaugurating the NSW Project, Dr. Isegbe highlighted how this initiative will further strengthen NAQS’s mandate on trade facilitation.

He pointed out that NAQS has automated the process for obtaining phytosanitary certifications through the ePhyto system, allowing exporters to apply for certifications from anywhere in the world.

This system, he said, ensures transparency and integrity, as both local and international stakeholders can easily verify the authenticity of the certificates.

NAQS reaffirmed its commitment to the success of the NSW Project and encouraged Nigerians to engage with the Export Certification Value Chain to facilitate smooth entry into the export trade of vital agricultural products.
