Leading e-hailing platform in Nigeria, Bolt announced four winners earlier in 2022 from its 2021 Driver’s League Challenge. The competition, which was open to all drivers on the platform in Nigeria, awarded four winners with brand new cars. Aisosa Ekhayeme, a female Bolt driver from Benin, won the Women’s Driver League.

In this chat, Aisosa, a beautician in Benin, shared how she became the leading female driver on the Bolt platform in Nigeria.

Q: When did you start driving on Bolt and what was your occupation prior to joining the platform?

I started driving with Bolt in 2020, after the Covid lockdown. Before joining Bolt, I ran my personal business as a beautician, make-up artist, and hairstylist. Like everyone, we were affected by the effect of the pandemic, and then I thought to supplement my income.

Q: Why did you choose to drive on Bolt, considering that there are other means to earn extra income in Nigeria?

I started driving during my days off work to keep myself busy. Shortly I saw the opportunity and returns I earned, and I started enjoying it. So, I decided to drive full-time on the platform, and now I am the leading woman driver on the Bolt platform in the country. It is a privilege to attain this.

Q: You are one of the four car winners in the Bolt Driver’s League Challenge. How does this make you feel?

It is a great feeling. This is mainly because it shows that hard work still pays. If you put in the work, you’re bound to get the reward and recognition in a matter of time. So when I knew about the competition, I committed myself to it and believed I could win. I am happy that I came out as the top woman driver and received a great reward.

Q: Did you have your own car prior to winning the brand-new car, and how has this new car impacted you?

Yes, I had my personal car before, a Toyota Camry. The new car awarded to me by Bolt provides a lot of flexibility for me as I now have the option of choice. I can decide which car I want to use whenever I want to work. It reduces the pressure on my Camry and has reduced my trips to the mechanic workshop.

Q: Driving is mostly dominated by men. What is the overall experience for you as a woman being a driver?

Initially, it was hard to get acceptance from riders. I remember pulling up to customers, and some would cancel their rides soon as they saw a female driver on the wheels or whenever they hear a female voice on the phone. However, there has been a lot of awareness, and now it is way better. The acceptance of female e-hailing drivers in Nigeria has appreciated since I started in 2020.

Q: How has being a Bolt driver helped your finances and enabled you to be your own boss?

Driving on Bolt has enabled me to attain many of my financial goals. I have been able to support my family with my supplemental income. Ride-hailing is a system that rewards effort, and as long as you’re determined, it just keeps getting better. My determination led me to become the leading female driver on the Bolt platform.

Q: Can you tell us about exciting initiatives or solutions by Bolt that have improved your quality of driving or overall experience?

I love Bolt’s bonus incentive programs. It always provides motivation. Also, Bolt's superior technology provides convenience right from your cell phone and greatly helps with routing and rider engagement. This is the reason why Bolt is the preferred platform for drivers.

Q: You are an inspiration. What advise do you have for other women and potential drivers looking to join the Bolt platform?

My advice is sign up already. Put in the hard work. Don’t be afraid of any discrimination because there’s none whatsoever that should mean anything to you. It is fun all the way because Bolt provides all the incentives and support to help you set goals and achieve them easily.
