Amosun arms saga: There’s nothing sinister about the issue yet - Presidency

An allegation that the former governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, illegally imported massive weapons and ammunition into the country has been dismissed by the presidency.
In a text message sent to ThisDay, presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, said preliminary investigation by IGP Mohammed Adamu showed that there was no sinister motive in Amosun’s action.

Legit.ng gathers that Shehu stated: “The IG of police, Adamu Mohammed, has undertaken a preliminary investigation [and] is issuing a statement on the issue of those guns in Ogun state.
“At this early stage, we don’t think that there is anything sinister about the whole issue.”
Premium Times had previously reported that the former governor returned to the police commissioner of Osun state, Basir Makama, four million bullets, 1,000 AK47 rifles, 1,000 bulletproof vests and one armoured personnel carrier (APC) he allegedly stockpiled at the Oke Mosan Government House for an extended period of time.
It was reported that shortly after he was contacted, the commissioner raced to government house with some of his subordinates, adding that on arrival, truckloads of arms and ammunition were brought out of a nondescript amoury inside the government house.
However, CP Makama denied that Amosun reportedly handed over weapons and ammunition to security operatives following the end of his tenure as governor.
On his part, the former governor also denied surrendering 1000 AK47 rifle to CP Makama a day before he left office on May, 29.
Amosun said though a routine exercise took place at his office on Tuesday, May 28 as part of handing over processes and formalities to the in-coming administration, no single AK47 rifle was handed over at the event.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the All Progressives Congress in Ogun state allegedly called for the arrest of Senator Ibikunle Amosun over the allegation that he stock-piled ammunition prior to the 2019 general election.
The party, in a statement by its spokesperson, Tunde Oladunjoye, said failing to arrest the former governor will bring the law to ridicule.
