Al-Makura Is Not Getting Off So Easy With Illegal Panel – Nasarawa assembly

The move to impeach Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al-Makura is still going on according to the chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Information and Security, Baba Ibaku.

He stated this in an interview with Punch reporters in Lafia and said they won't back down from impeaching the Governor.

He said that the panel, which was setup by Nasarawa state Chief Judge was illegal and goes against breached Section 188 Subsection (5) of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

He said that the date of the sitting was not shared with the lawmakers and they were not sure Tuesday or not.

The lawmaker stated: “As far as we are concerned, there is no seven-man panel that is investigating Governor Al-Makura, because we had earlier asked the state chief judge to disband the panel.

“We sent our legal team to appear before the panel yesterday (Tuesday) and we instructed them to simply tell the Chairman of the panel, Yusuf Usman, that we (the lawmakers) only appeared through our legal team to register our protest against the composition of the panel because the members of the panel are political office holders.

“We will go-ahead with our moves to impeach Governor Al-Makura and nothing will stop us to step down on our plans, no matter what it entails. We are going to file a case before the law court as soon as we finish our deliberation. We will always sit in any part of the state to pass another resolution,” he stated.

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly had on Monday, July 14, 2014, passed a resolution for impeachment notice against Al-Makura. On receipt of the allegations of impeachable offences against Governor Al-Makura, the Chief Judge in Nasarawa state set up a seven-member impeachment panel in compliance with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution.

However, on the 5th of August, the seven-member panel after concluding its work and listening to the counsel to the Assembly, dropped all 16 charges against the governor.
