Failed Impeachment Was Planned To Distract My Government – Al-Makura
Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Al-Makura has described the failed impeachment process by the state’s House of Assembly against him as a distraction to his administration and state.
Gov. Umaru Al-Makura
At a news briefing in Lafia on Wednesday, August 6, Al-Makura said that the dismissal of the allegations leveled against him by the investigative panel was not a victory for him or his political party, All Progressive Congress (APC), but victory for democracy and Nasarawa indigenes.
According to Leadership report, the governor said that though the impeachment process instituted by the lawmakers was not coherent with the Constitution, he submitted himself to the investigative panel constituted by the Chief Judge of the state, because he was a democrat, who believed in the rule of law.
He disclosed that his programme in the state had been affected by the impeachment attempt.
He therefore called on the people, especially the lawmakers, to partner with his government in moving the state to greater heights.

He also expressed gratitude to the people of the state for supporting him while also appealing to them to remain law-abiding and go about their lawful businesses.
The Nasarawa State House of Assembly had on Monday, 14 July, 2014, passed a resolution for impeachment notice against Al-Makura. On receipt of the allegations of impeachable offences against Governor Al-Makura, the Chief Judge in Nasarawa state set up a seven-member impeachment panel in compliance with the provisions of Section 188 of the Constitution.
However, yesterday, the seven-member panel after concluding its work and listening to the counsel to the Assembly, dropped all 16 charges against the governor.
