Gunmen Abduct Bayelsa Speaker’s Younger Brother
Latest news coming out of Bayelsa state indicate that unknown gunmen have kidnapped the younger brother of Bayelsa State House of Assembly Speaker, Iniokpoemi Benson.
According to Leadership, the speaker's brother was abducted at 3am on Monday, August 4, 2014, in Korokorosei community of Southern Ijaw local government area in Bayelsa.
Commenting on the abduction, Mr Hilary Okpara, Commissioner of Police in Bayelsa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview in Yenagoa that the police special anti-kidnap squad was on the trail of the kidnappers.
“We have got information on the incident, the DPO in the area and the Assistant Commissioner of Police have briefed me and the good thing is that we have known the direction the hoodlums are heading to so we shall round them up,” Okpara said.
The commissioner assured that the gunmen would be apprehended and the victim rescued.
It was gathered that Benson was the immediate past chairman of the community’s development committee.

The commissioner also commented on the fate of 90-year-old Madam Florentina Paulker, mother of Sen. Emmanuel Paulker representing Bayelsa Central, who was abducted in July.
“We have made some progress on that incident, we arrested one of them within hours and the next day we arrested three more subjects who are helping us and we are still making more arrests.
“It is a syndicate from what we have found out, we have cut off the communication link between the suspects in our custody and those holding the woman, so we are hoping that soon we shall free her,” he said.

Meanwhile, this latest kidnap brings to three the number of high profile kidnaps in Bayelsa in the last two weeks.
It would be recalled that some unknown gunmen had kidnapped Senator Emmanuel Paulker’s 90-year-old motheron Wednesday, 29 July, 2014.
The abduction of the federal lawmaker's mother, Florentina Paulker, was alleged to have taken place at her residence in Opolo-Epie, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Speaking on the kidnap of Madam Florentina Paulker, the commissioner said: “We have made some progress on that incident, we arrested one of them within hours and the next day we arrested three more subjects who are helping us and we are still making more arrests. “It is a syndicate from what we have found out, we have cut off the communication link between the suspects in our custody and those holding the woman, so we are hoping that soon we shall free her."
Also, a 77-year-old mother of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Surv Furoebi Akene, was freed on 16 June, 2014 after she was kidnapped for three days.
Madam Patimi was reportedly abducted on 13 June, 2014 without any gunshot and whisked away by armed men numbering about six from her home close to the Fonibiri community waterside at about 12am.
