Attack On Buhari, The Beginning Of More Assassination Plots – Expert

Following the bomb blast in Kaduna, which allegedly targeted a former Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), and Muslim cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, in Kaduna, security expert, Dr Ona Ekhomu, has said the choice of targets was calculated.

According to him, the Kaduna bombings were an indicator of more assassination plots against top politicians and religious leaders by the insurgents.

Describing the attack as an attempt to plunge Nigeria into widespread politico-ethno-religious violence, he said the development might have triggered a violent conflict between All Progressives Congress, APC, and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, supporters; Christians and Muslims and also youths and security agents because of the perceived inability of the security agencies to prevent incessant killings in Nigeria, Vanguard reports.

"Had any of the two assassination attempts succeeded, the concomitant violent reaction by citizens would have been widespread and deadly, he said.

He, therefore, called on top level serving and former political executives, civil servants, military and police officers to take their personal security seriously so that Boko Haram would not have the opportunity to harm them.

He called on Nigerian executives to train and equip their executive protection specialists and drivers in order to survive the change in target selection of Boko Haram.

A twin blast had occurred in different locations in Kaduna on Wednesday, July 23. The first blast, which occurred along Isa Kaita road, was said to be targeted at Sheik Darihu Bauchi, a renowned Islamic cleric, while the second one went off near the Kawo Bridge, and it was reportedly aimed at Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the data provided by the police 40 people were killed in both attacks, but unofficial sources put the death toll at 82.

The attack has been condemned by the prominent Nigerian politicians, like former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former FCT Minister, El-Rufai, and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party.

Former Niger-Delta Militant, Alhaji Mujahid Asari Dokubo, has, however, described the Kaduna attack as a plot to cause calamity in Nigeria and push the military to take over from the President Goodluck Jonathan.
