Adamawa Impeachment: EFCC Moves To Declare Nyako Wanted
The impeached governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has been declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Investigations revealed that the leadership of the commission decided to declare Nyako wanted after he failed to honour the commission’s invitations after his removal from office.
Confirming the development, the Head of Media and Publicity for the anti-corruption commission, Wilson Uwujaren, told Punch in a telephone interview that the decision to declare Nyako wanted was borne out of the inability to track him down since his removal from office by the members of the state House of Assembly.
"Since Nyako was removed, he has been elusive. So the commission has devised a strategy to declare him wanted. The commission is planning to declare him wanted," Wilson said.
An aide to the sacked governor, who pleaded anonymity, said his boss has already been declared wanted by the commission.
However, former deputy governor of the state, Bala Ngilari who reportedly resigned just before Nyako's impeachment, appeared before the EFCC on Tuesday, July 22 and was grilled for about three hours by the EFCC operatives.
A highly placed source at the commission said: “The former deputy governor was here. He responded to our invitation, he interacted with operatives for some hours before he was allowed to go.”
Revealed: Why Adamawa Lawmakers Impeached Murtala Nyako
Speaking on the matter, Nyako’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Ahmad Sajoh, said he was neither surprised nor disturbed by EFCC’s decision to go after his boss, adding that posterity would judge the Nyako administration kindly, just like it did former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Sanusi Lamido who was harassed by the government.
Sajoh said: "We have no fears. They harassed a former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Sanusi Lamido, and today he is the Emir of Kano. So, if what they are doing has Allah’s support, he would not elevate the people being humiliated. There is judgment of history; there is judgment of God. Today they are at the helm of affairs; it does not mean they will be at the helm of affairs tomorrow. They should also await Allah’s judgment."
Nyako was impeached on July 15 by the Adamawa Assembly for financial impropriety running into billions of Naira. According to report, he has since fled the country following his removal from office, so as to avoid being harassed by security agents, who have been on his trail.
