I Know Why Fayemi Is Rejecting My Victory, Fayose Says

Governor-elect of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose, has explained why incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi is making a u-turn to reject the result of the 21 June, 2014, election in the state.

According to Fayose, the new resolve by Governor Fayemi was to boost support for the All Progressives Congress, APC’s suit at the election tribunal.

Fayose, who spoke on Monday, 21 July, 2014 during a programme on “Progress FM,” a sister station of Radio Nigeria based in Ado-Ekiti, stated that Fayemi must have been advised to recant in order not to jeopardise the suit filed by the APC challenging the outcome of the election.

“I think what went wrong was that APC and its leaders feel that by accepting defeat, Fayemi has shot their suit in the leg, but they are still wrong.

“Their case has nothing to stand on; they did the same thing in 2003 when I defeated one of their current chieftains, former governor Niyi Adebayo, and the eventual result was that they came back empty.

“You will recall that APC won in only 16 wards out of a total of 177 wards in the state in the June 21 election.

“Fayemi then called to congratulate me and promised that we will work together for a smooth transition.

“I submitted names for the membership of the Transition Committee, but to my surprise, we are yet to hear anything from his government.

“All I know is that if one is inconsistent with himself and the people, he will end up making himself a jester,” the governor elect said.

Fayose also accused the administration of “hurriedly” recruiting 3,000 workers for the civil service and another 1,000 workers for the state-owned university.

He also alleged that some civil servants were collaborating with the government to backdate their appointments by a year, vowing to deal with all those involved on assumption of office.

It would be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declared Fayose of the governorship elections on 22 June, 2014.

Speaking after INEC announced the result of the election, Fayemi had congratulated Fayose for winning governorship elections in Ekiti state for the second time.

Fayose had attributed his re-election to his familiarity with the grassroots people in Ekiti.
