Revealed: Why Adamawa Lawmakers Impeached Murtala Nyako

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamawa State chapter, yesterday, July 21, disclosed that former governor of the state, Murtala Nyako's impeachment saga started when he refused to grant lawmakers’ request of about N1.25bn constituency projects.

Speaking at a press briefing at the party’s secretariat in Yola, the state capital, Adamawa State chairman of the APC, Hon. Binta Masi Garba, said Nyako had refused to oblige the lawmakers, telling them he could only afford N500million for the projects. This offended the lawmakers who then succumbed to the impeachment move planned by the PDP.

She explained that N350 million had already been released to them before the impeachment but they were not pacified and went ahead with the impeachment.

She added that the removal of Nyako was a ploy by the PDP to coerce the opposition into joining their party.

According to her, she said the visit of the acting governor to the PDP secretariat to intimate them that he has captured Adamawa for them is all that is needed to understand that the PDP was behind the impeachment of Nyako, which was conducted with the highest form of impunity.

She however said, the APC which respects the rule of law will use democratic means in recapturing its mandate stolen by the PDP, adding that it has since filed a suit to challenge the PDP.

Nyako was removed as governor of Adamawa by the state House of Assembly after he was probed and found guilty of financial misconduct. There were reports that he had fled the country shortly after being removed from office, in a bid to avoid being harassed by security agents, who have been looking for him and for security concerns about his life.

In reaction to Nyako’s disappearance, the presidency had said his running away is a clear indication that the accusations against him were correct.

Meanwhile, the National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had alleged that the presidency and the Peoples Democratic Party sponsored the impeachment of the governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako.
