22 Arrested Over Impeachment Protest In Nasarawa

Twenty two people have been arrested in Lafia by the police command in Nasarawa state, following a violent protest by some groups over the start of impeachment proceedings against Governor of the state, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura.

This was disclosed on Friday, July 18, by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Idris, while briefing journalists on behalf of the state joint security committee.

According to PM News report, Idris disclosed that a fake policeman was among those arrested, while security operatives were on the trail of four people who allegedly masterminded the crisis.

The police commissioner said five shops and a residential apartment were vandalised. A vehicle was also burnt by the hoodlums.

Items recovered from the suspects include a locally-made pistol, some ammunitions, knives and dangerous weapons.

Contrary to reports, Idris said no life was lost, but two persons sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at a hospital in Lafia, adding that the situation had been brought under control.

He urged the people to always be vigilant and pursue peace, while also warning those spreading misleading rumours that were capable of aggravating the current security situation in the state to stop.

He also called on journalists to always verify their information before going public, as any misinformation to members of the public could cause panic.

It could be recalled that the Nasarawa State House of Assembly had on Monday, 14 July, 2014, passed a resolution for impeachment notice against Al-Makura. While answering questions from journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday, Governor Al-Makura attributed his present impeachment travails to the handiwork of the Presidency in Abuja.

Reports on Thursday, 17 July, 2014, indicated that that three people had allegedly lost their lives, while one person was wounded in Nasarawa State due to a protest over impeachment proceedings against Al-Makura, the current governor of the state.

Al-Makura was one of the PDP founding members in the State in 1998 and defected to Congress for Progressive Change after losing in the 2011 PDP primary elections. He won the election, defeating the incumbent governor Aliyu Akwe-Doma of the PDP. Al-Makura, a member of the APC, is on the verge of being impeached after the PDP-dominated Assembly of his state accused him of gross misconduct.
