Boko Haram Strikes Again, Destroys Bridge Linking Maiduguri-Damaturu-Biu Road

The popular Madafuma bridge linking 185km Biu- Damboa- Maiduguri federal road has been reportedly destroyed by gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram.

The bridge was destroyed over the weekend when the gunmen planted Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs under it. When the IEDs exploded, remarkable portions of the bridge was damaged leaving motorists and passengers stranded.

According to Vanguard report, one Mallam Musa Yakubu said the explosion took place on Saturday at about 2am when people were asleep.

"We heard a loud bang on Saturday and on Sunday morning when we gathered in Madafuma village to go round our surroundings early in the morning, we found out that the bridge linking us with Biu local Government Area and MA Dara Girau has been blown off, all motorists heading to Maiduguri from Biu especially long vehicles had no option than to make u- turn back to Gombe, unfortunately, small vehicles had to manage the remaining thin portion which has not been affected in the blast, but it is very risky," Mallam Musa explained.

Residents of Biu added that trucks loaded with Tubers of yam from Taraba and Benue states had to return back to Biu on Sunday and took another road through Gombe- Potiskum- Damaturu- Maiduguri road which they described as a long and hectic journey.

The road which is one of the major routes linking Maiduguri, to the Southern parts of the state had been reportedly taken over by Boko Haram, forcing travellers to take other longer routes to their destinations. It was gathered that those travelling to the Borno South had to go through Yode and Gombe States before turning Northwards to get to their destination, which most of the commuters described as "hectic journey". Travellers going to Damboa and Biu were said to be the worst affected by the development.

Boko Haram sect members have continued to carry out their massacres in Borno State. It was reported on July 4th that five people, including a police officer, were killed in a suicide bomb explosion in Konduga area of the state.
