Baby Factory Operators Nabbed, Paraded In Rivers

Three pregnant women and a 36-year-old man suspected to be involved in a Baby factory operation have been paraded by the Rivers state police command.

The baby factory suspects

Parading the suspects yesterday, July 8, the Divisional Police Officer of Igwuruta Police Station, Mr. Bello Muhammed, said they were arrested on July 5, 2014 at Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area, after a tip off from well meaning Nigerians that someone was operating a baby factory in Umuehe in Igwuruta.

The names of the suspects were given as Odinchinma Nwala (25), Glory Anyanwu (22), Goodness Nwankwo (19), and Stanley Okechukwu (male, 36).

According to Punch report, Muhammed explained that after the tip off, the police sent a patrol team to confirm the information and it was discovered that the suspects had been involved in the business for a long time. They then traced and arrested Okechukwu, who took them to where the girls were being kept.

“The girls were brought from different local government areas, and further investigation revealed that after delivering, he will pay the girls N100,000 per baby girl and N150,000 for a baby boy before selling the babies,” the DPO said.

He added that investigation was ongoing to get to the root of the matter.

Speaking to newsmen, one of the suspects, Okechukwu, however denied operating a baby factory, saying he was only helping the young pregnant women.

Also speaking, one of the pregnant women, Glory said Okechukwu saw her condition and decided to assist her by offering her accommodation. She denied being kept there for baby producing business.

The police have been discovering baby factories in different parts of the country. In April, three teenage pregnant girls were rescued from a ‘baby factory’ in Adigbe community of Abeokuta, Ogun State and a female operator of the factory was subsequently arrested by the police.
