Kidnapped Bayelsa Commissioner’s Mother Has Been Released

77-year-old kidnapped mother of the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Surv Furoebi Akene, has been freed.

Madam Patimi, who was abducted on June 16 without any gunshot and whisked away by armed men numbering about six from her home close to the Fonibiri community waterside at about 12am, was released yesterday at an undisclosed location some distance away from the coastal town of Lobia in the same council area.

The commissioner, who confirmed the release of his mother, thanked Bayelsans for showing concern throughout the family's trying moment:

“Mama has been released. We thank God she is hale and hearty and we want to thank all those who assisted us in ensuring her safe return," he said.

The good news is coming less than five days after the commissioner said the kidnappers had threatened to cut off his mother's head and deliver it to his house him.

It was reported that the kidnappers initially demanded his resignation from the cabinet of Governor Seriake Dickson, but later demanded  N30m ransom, which they reduced to N10m.

It's, however, not certain if the N10million ransom demanded by the kidnappers was paid. But a source close to the family told Vanguard that a little amount of money was handed out to placate her captors, which necessitated her release.

Also a family source who spoke anonymously said: “We were told by the kidnappers to buy them four Nokia handsets and dropped same at an agreed place in the mangrove swamp which we obliged them before mama was set free.”
