Expert Explains How Boko Haram Violence Affects Nigerians
Expert says that the recurring explosions in Nigeria not only kill hundreds of innocent people, but also cause mental problems, suicides and constant fear both in the survivors and other country residents.
The Cable refers to Mr. Samuel Jinadu, a clinical psychologist at the Centre for Psychological Medicine, Synapse Services, Abuja, who commented on the far-reaching effect of violence. According to him while anxiety and insomnia are symptoms of post-traumatic stress, other mental problems emerge later.
"There will also be some cases of suicide, which comes as a result of depression. The victims may feel helpless and hopeless, without any reason to continue life."
The expert continued that in the face of such danger people become suspicious of one another, adding that the blasts affect everyone and cause mass fear.
"In fact, some on lookers might end up with anxiety problems, paranoia and depression for experiencing the gruesome waste of lives."
Thus Jinadu urged the Nigerian authorities also to pay attention to explosion victims' psychological state, saying that "Boko Haram is trying to inflict wounds on the minds of Nigerians".
In his opinion, mental damage caused by the insurgents is much worse than a wound, and the affected victims need serious rehabilitation and psychological help.
It would be recalled that one of the recent deadly attacks took place in Borno State, where more than 50 people were reportedly killed by suspected Boko Haram members, and in Abuja, following the explosion in the shopping mall with at least 21 people dead.
