Two Akwa Ibom Kids Set Ablaze In Uyo Over Witchcraft Accusations
Two street kids have suffered severe burns in controversial circumstances in the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, Uyo. The victims, identified as Namanso Edet-Bassey, 8, and Kufre Effiong, 9, are being treated at St. Luke’s Hospital.
According to police report, the children were burnt in an uncompleted building over accusations of witchcraft.
The victims described themselves as homeless kids, who had nowhere to go and who found shelter in the uninhabited house on the outskirts of Uyo.
A video by ChannelsTV showed Namanso Edet-Bassey in a hospital. She said that her parents have separated, so she was abandoned and sleeps in an uncompleted building. The second victim, Kufre Effiong, calls the street his home.
The duo was rescued by a Sister from a local Catholic Convent. The Reverend Sister has also made a formal report to the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Etim Dickson, confirmed he was aware of the report that some of the children were tagged as witches. He also expressed optimism on finding and prosecuting those responsible.
