Ekiti Elections: Presidency Denies APC'S Accusations
The Presidency has replied accusation by the All Progressive Congress (APC) that President Jonathan's administration was acting undemocratically ahead of the gubernatorial elections in Ekiti which is scheduled for Saturday, June 21.
According to Dr Reuben Abati, the special adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, APC's accusation was absolutely wrong as in the Ekiti election and any other elections, the government is committed to one man, one vote; and one woman, one vote.
PM News reports that this was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday, June 20 in Abuja.
Part of the statement read, "This accusation cannot stand at all. The Jonathan administration remains committed to democracy and its principles."
The statement said Jonathan's administration which has been most tolerant of opposition is committed to free and fair elections.
"This is in fact one of the major areas of achievements of his administration" the statement read.
Reuben explained that the president has utmost respect for the citizens’ rights of association but that the security agencies have an obligation to stop people who want to compromise the integrity of the process.
He therefore called on APC and its leaders to embark on soul searching rather than cry wolf where there is none.
APC had released a report yesterday that the PDP-led federal government had stopped the governors of Kano, Rivers and Edo from attending the APC governorship campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti.
Reacting to this, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, accused the Jonathan-led administration of fully militarizing Ekiti State while Atiku Abubakar said the government's action is capable of turning Nigeria into a Banana Republic where fundamental rights of citizens are trampled upon with impunity.
Meanwhile there was a report that APC had lied about federal officials preventing the plane carrying the Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, from landing in Akure as he was in Kano at the time of the report and had no plans of travelling to Ekiti.
