INEC Launches Nationwide Campaign To 'Wake Up' Voters In Nigeria
The voters in Nigeria are experiencing some kind of apathy, which is being caused by the necessity to choose between the political parties in which either disappointed them, or failed to gain any significant trust. Therefore, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offered some specific steps on how to overcome it, NAN reports.
The commission informed on June 19, 2014, Thursday that a special nationwide campaign would be launched to encourage the voters to participate actively in the upcoming 2015 general elections.
This has been confirmed by Alhaji Haliru Tambawel, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kaduna State, during inauguration of a 16-member Interagency Advisory Committee on voter education and publicity in the state. The committee includes
The commissioner admitted that Nigerians have low level of trust to INEC and its activities due to “deliberate misinformation by politicians”.
However, the main electoral body of the country wants to restore people’s confidence. One of the first possible steps would be talking to people in the correct manner, ensure that they are well-informed.
As a part its campaign on informing the electorate, the INEC made the following illustrated instuctions available on Twitter:
The INEC official noted that people have been living in conditions of misinformation for too long and this has to be corrected before 2015 elections.
The activities of the committee would be aimed at attract Nigerians to the electoral process and to put an end to their scepticism.
He called on the committee members to promote positive attitudes among the electorate to comply with electoral laws, stop all forms of malpractice and violence. The official also expressed optimism that the general elections would be credible, fair and hitch-free.
It would be added that INEC’s closes test would be in Ekiti State, where governorship elections take place this weekend (June 21).
Nigerian citizens are to elect the president on February 14, 2015, Saturday.
