Management Shuts Down OAU Indefinitely Over Students Protest

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has been shut down indefinitely by the management of the institution.

The school was shut down on Wednesday, June 18 following protests by the students over the hike in the school fees.

The students were given 48 hours to vacate the school premises.

In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, the school was shut down to forestall break down of law and order.

The students of the institution have been protesting since Monday to demand the reversal of the school fees increased by the management.

Earlier at a press conference, the VC, Bamitale Omole, had defended the hike in school fees, saying what students of OAU were being charged was not only the lowest in the entire Nigerian University system but also the most ridiculous in the entire tertiary educational system in Africa.

OAU students have joined their colleagues all over the country in protests.

Recently the University of Lagos (UNILAG) was shut, following protests by angry students against tuition fee hike.

On the 5th of June, students of the Lagos State University (LASU) yesterday, stormed the Lagos State Government House in Alausa ,Ikeja, protesting the recent hike in their school fees. They even started cooking, dancing and praying there.

Two days ago, the University of Abuja was also shut down indefinitely following protests by the students over examination.
