Atiku Abubakar To Declare His Run For Presidency Next Month
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is going to declare his intention to run for the presidency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in July.
According to a source, had assembled a campaign team which is to be headed by a former minister from the South-West.
It was gathered that Atiku Abubakar would have declared his ambition long ago but he was waiting for the party’s national executive to settle down in office.
"Turaki is still very much in the race and he will declare his ambition next month. He is waiting for the newly-elected national executive of the party to settle down in office," the source stated.
It seems that Atiku who will be running for the presidency for the third time will apply for the party’s ticket with former military Head of State, Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, two prominent party members who have been touted to be eyeing the presidency.
With the conclusion of the party’s national convention that produced former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, as national chairman, the APC presidential candidate is to come from the North in deference to the delicate geopolitical balancing which any serious party in the country does not toy with.
Based on the zoning formula released last week by the party which zoned the position of the national secretary to the North-East, it was speculated that Atiku might have been tactically edged out of contention for the party’s presidential ticket.
But the Atiku Media Office faulted such a report, saying at no time did the party’s Convention Planning Committee or its recently-dissolved Interim National Executive Council (NEC) discuss the issue of zoning of elective offices outside the positions of leadership of the party.
