University Of Abuja Closed Indefinitely Over Students' Protest

The University Of Abuja has been shut down indefinitely by the school's Governing Council following a protest by students on the two campuses.

PUNCH reports that on Monday, notices were placed on all notice boards in each department, ordering every student to leave the hostels and campuses immediately.

The notice, signed by the Registrar, Mohammed Modibbo, read, “I am directed to inform you that given the situation in the university, the Vice Chancellor has approved that the university be closed down until further notice.

“You are therefore directed to vacate the university until further development is communicated to you.”

Confirming the institution's closure, the Director of Information Unit of the university, Waziri Garba said it was shut down following protests by aggrieved students who were agitating for the conduct of their semester examination.

According to some of the students, who took part in the protest at the Gwagwalada mini- campus, they were chased out of the campus and the school put under lock and key.

As at the time of filing this report, students are packing their luggage preparing to leave while some have left since when the strike action started.

The university, which has been in existence for almost three decades, has been enmeshed in a series of crises, which has also impeded its growth.

Recall that in March, thousands of its students had taken to major roads of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, protesting over lack power and water supply to the permanent campus site of the university.
