The first warnings on twitter appeared in the afternoon of June 12, 2014, Thursday:

The true reason for riots and shooting is still to be ascertained, though it has been learnt that the fire was sparked by an alleged minor disagreement at the Makoko area. It grew into a bloody exchange, when the raging hoodlums took the fight to Herbert Macaulay Street and the Adekunle end of the Third Mainland Bridge.

The hoodlums have reportedly vandalized vehicles in the area, raided shops and robbed both pedestrians and motorists of their belongings.

The area boys were carrying guns and dangerous weapons. They were in charge of the location for hours, before the police intervened, restrained them and returned normalcy.

The clash happened in parallel with a serious rainfall. Both of these factors caused a terrible traffic jam that lasted for hours in Yaba and on the road leading to Lagos Island.
