Boko Haram Crisis: UK Holds Meeting On Nigerian insecurity

Following last month's summit in Paris, the United Kingdom would be hosting a meeting to discuss the security challenges in Nigeria as well as find a solution to the Boko Haram menace.

The meeting is being organised by the British Foreign secretary, William Hague.

The high-level gathering will be attended by Nigeria's Foreign Minister Aminu Wali, representatives from the US, the European Union, Canada and Nigeria's neighbours Benin, Chad, Cameroon and Niger.

Mr Hague had in a statement last week said the meeting in London would build on agreements on intelligence sharing, co-ordinated border patrols and developing a regional count-terrorism strategy and would "consider further options to combat terrorism in northern Nigeria".

The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the London summit on ending sexual violence in conflict, which will be co-hosted by Mr Hague and UN special envoy and actress Angelina Jolie.

Since the abduction of over 200 school girls from Chibok community in Borno state by the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram, Nigeria has been offered foreign help to find the missing girls and also curb the insurgency.

The international community has been working closely with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism.

Last month, a regional summit was held in Paris which was attended by President Jonathan where regional powers discussed measures to tackle terrorism in West Africa and also pledged to share intelligence and co-ordinate action against the group and its five-year insurgency.

President Goodluck Jonathan had also attended a high-level discussions in South Africa which was attended by other African Heads of State and Government and they discussed combating terrorism.

Boko Haram has continued to wage war on the poor and helpless citizens of the country especially in Borno state. Many have been killed, houses destroyed, villages burnt down and people rendered homeless.
