Goodluck Jonathan Nominates Alison-Madueke As OPEC Secretary-General

President Goodluck Jonathan has nominated Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke as secretary-general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

This was made known Tuesday by Reuters. The proposal is said to be aimed at breaking the deadlock over the post created by opposing candidates from Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

According to Daily Times Nigeria, the candidacy is likely to receive support within African countries in OPEC, as Nigeria is first, the most populous country in OPEC and second, plays important role in oil market producing 1,954 barrels per day.

If the post, which is to be vacated in December, will go to Alison-Madueke, the minister will become the first female in this position, Sahara Reporters recalls.
