A Controlled Explosion In Kurudu, Abuja, Makes Residents Panic

Residents of FCT Abuja were thrown into panic and confusion as a loud explosion occurred in Kurudu community, outskirts of Abuja, in the morning of May 29, 2014.

Locals, who still clearly remember two Nyanya bomb blasts, prayed for the best. And, apparetly, they have been heard by the creator.

An Army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Olajide Olaleye, confirmed to Premium Times that the explosion, which rocked the Kurudu area was a “controlled blast”.

He further explained that dynamites were used to destroy the rock which had been blocking a new road under construction. It was necessary to conduct the blast in order to continue building of the road from Karishi to Apo, in the Abuja city centre.

Gen.Olaleye urged the residents to remain calm, adding that the situation was under control.

Nervous Morning In Country's Capital

According to Premium Times, who interviewed a resident of an Army Estate in Kurudu, soldiers have simply sealed-off the gates, banned movement in the area right after the explosion.

"The loud sound shook my windows and appliances and I am still in shock, don't know what caused the sound" - a resident of Karu narrated. The residents could not identify what caused the powerful blow.

The development caused panic in Kurudu, Jikoyi and other neighbouring areas, as people feared for their safety.
