Mutiny In Maiduguri Barracks Against Newly Appointed GOC

A week after soldiers of the 7th  Division on the Nigerian army in Maiduguri mutinied against the GOC, who was soon removed from his position, the situation repeated with the newly appointed GOC Brigadier General Mahmid Yakubu Ibrahim.

Referring to several sources Sahara Reporters provided that the second mutiny started around 3:00 p.m., when the angered soldiers gathered at a spot and marched to the Division headquarters, where Ibrahim's office is located.

The protesters, who demanded that the Commander paid their overdue allowance and reinstated  the banned motorbikes to enable transport of soldiers and their family members in the territory of the Maimalari barracks, shot sporadically in the air.

Lamenting that not many of them have own cars, they wondered why Ibrahim forbade use of the only affordable transport means.

"If no okada [motorcycles] are allowed, then our small children have to walk to school and our wives will walk to market. Are we not suffering too much already?" said one of the them.

According to the sources, the military forced the GOC out of the building and pushed him all the way through barracks to show him what it was like to trek in that territory without having barracks.

It would be recalled that the first mutiny of the 7th Division, which also involved sporadic shooting, was connected with killing of the protesters' colleagues during an ambush, over not being give adequate weaponry and non-timely payment of allowances. Following the incident the acting GOC Major General Ahmed Mohammed was removed and redeployed.
