Military Takes Over In Thailand

Military chiefs in Thailand have seized control of the nation after political parties failed to negotiate an end to their six months of political turmoil.

Army Head General Prayuth Chan-ocha announced the decision to take over the country in a televised statement.

He said the takeover was necessary for the country to return to normality quickly". He announced that they will seize power today by 4.30pm aided by armed forces, air force and police so as to "reform the political structure, the economy and society".

He said: "It is necessary for the Peace and Order Maintaining Command – which includes army, navy, armed forces and police – to take control of governing the country."

The political Turmoil has left the country in distress and has seen 28 people killed and more than 700 injured since November, when protesters demanded the outing of the Pheu Thai government.

This is Thailand's 19th coup in 82 years.
